Calling all Texas Teachers ~ Apply now for Texas Summer Institute on Genocide Education ~Free, June 3-6, 2026

During this 3-day, expenses-paid institute, experts from The Genocide Education Project and the Human Rights Program at Southern Methodist University will provide:

  • pedagogical principles and techniques for properly and effectively teaching the difficult topic of genocide
  • genocide histories and comparative analysis of the Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust, and other Nazi genocides, and the Cambodian Genocide
  • step-by-step lesson plans appropriate for secondary social studies and English language arts courses, aligned with the state-mandated TEKS curriculum standards
  • hands-on, interactive workshops developing a deeper understanding and tools for direct application in the classroom
  • Tour of St. Sarkis Armenian Church (modeled after the 7th-century St. Hripsime church) and cultural complex
  • Cultural experiences through food, dance, and workshops

Participation Details

25 qualified teachers will be accepted into the program. If selected, there is NO CHARGE for participation. Those traveling more than 75 miles from Carrollton, TX, will receive lodging, and their transportation costs will be reimbursed upon completion of the program. Most meals will be included.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Currently teaching Social Studies or English Language Arts for grades between 6-12, serving as an instructional coach, or enrolled in a Texas teacher training/pre-service program
  • Submit a completed application
  • Intend to remain in the education field for the next 5 years
  • Attend the entirety of the institute’s agenda, including all sessions (beginning with the Welcome Reception on June 3 and ending at 12:00 pm on June 6, 2026)

Applicants will be notified of their status by the end of March 2026.
