Free full-day workshop with a visit to the Library of Congress — “Exploring America’s Response to the Armenian Genocide using Primary Sources”, Thursday, December 4, 2025, 8:30 am-4:00 pm Washington, D.C.

Deepen your expertise in teaching about the Armenian Genocide during a day filled with varied learning experiences in the heart of Washington, D.C.! Discover Armenian culture and history and America’s unprecedented humanitarian response to the Armenian Genocide. Acquire free lesson plans to help use this story of American civilians taking bold action to save genocide survivors in your social studies curriculum.

The day begins with morning welcome refreshments and introductions, after which you’ll be guided through the fundamentals of teaching about the Armenian Genocide and learn about the U.S. response—the first major international humanitarian aid effort, which garnered massive popular participation—as well as the Armenian Genocide’s continuing effects in geopolitics and human rights today.

GenEd Education Director, Kerri Flynn, will lead the workshop, offering proper pedagogy and modes of inquiry for approaching this difficult topic with sensitivity, humanizing those who experienced it through use of primary sources related to Armenian culture and survival testimonies.

After an Armenian-style lunch, the workshop moves to the Library of Congress (transport provided) for an expert-led display of Armenian artifacts and a demonstration of the library’s web archives for classroom use.
